The USB Xtractor is the latest evolution in the Xtractor range of products, Maximus has now combined the spear and Xtractor into one product which is called the USB Xtractor. The serial port has been dropped as for most people it is of no use and most modern PC’s don’t have a serial port either, they have also built half of the components from the old model to inside the spear unit and the 360 power unit is totally separate. Why we think this latest design is much better than the old one is because having the 360 power unit separate limits the possibility of problems, also these latest USB Xtractor have re-settable fuses behind the Molex connector on the 360 power unit. For those of you that don’t already know, the Xtractor, Xecuter and other devices had a big problem with power spikes coming from the PC and killing the units and sometimes drives themself, each team slowly tried new ways to handle this problem without much success, that is until now with the USB Xtractor having resettable fuses on the 360 power unit section, if the unit receives a power spike from a user turning on the PC while the Xtractors power switch is in the on position, what would have happened on older units would be the fuses behind the Molex would blow and the unit would not function unless these fuses were replaced, or removed and points bridged which could be dangerous as there would be nothing preventing a power spike from then killing a drive.
Now with the 360 USB Xtractor and the resettable fuses, if the 360 power unit does receive a power spike for whatever reason, the fuses will kick in stopping power from going to the drive and after a short while will reset and give power back to the drive again, we think this is the best solution used by any team making devices such as these and Maximus has been the first to do it, no doubt the other teams will copy the idea, but you know who did it first and sent the benchmark for a strong and reliable product. Without these resettable fuses you run the risk of power spikes killing your 360 power unit, and without any fuses at all could lead to drives being fried or worse, so when buying the USB Xtractor you can be sure the unit will last, and there will be no chances of power spikes damaging your product or drives you are working on, if you’re looking for the best and most advanced extraction / flashing device for the 360 the USB Xtractor bundle is it.
Some other design changes have been made with the USB Xtractor, they no longer use a power cable running from the PCB to the drive and have opted for a direct connection method, the 360 power unit section of the USB Xtractor now has a plug on the underside of the PCB that allows you to plug it directly into the back of the drive, this we think is nice and neat and for people that are using the devices a lot on a daily basis rules out the power / data cable ever getting worn out and need replacing. The spear part of the USB Xtractor is now a wider design mainly due to the USB part of the PCB being inside the spear, but this makes for a easier grip as the original spear was quite thin and a little flimsy. There is now also a little button on the spear which will interact with the Maximus reader and soon Jungleflasher, when first pressed it will auto prompt the software to be ready to read, with a double press it will then commence the reading of the firmware, just another neat little feature that Maximus has added to make life easier for us all.
