The Wasabi team have stepped up to the plate and joined the latest evolution of Wii chips and are proud to bring you the Wasabi DX mod chip for Wii. This latest Wasabi DX works the same as the Drivekey where rather than connecting to the controller chip of the DVD drive, it runs directly off the DVD drives ribbon cable, this also means the Wasabi DX will work on the latest D3 drives as well as all other Wii drives. The Wasabi team have been around since early 08 and their chips have always been the highest quality and we except the same thing from the Wasabi DX modchip. If you are the owner of a brand new D3 drive, or even the epoxy D2E drive, these DVD cable chips can be a really good and cost effective solution for your console. The Wasabi DX like other DVD ribbon chips is limited to 3x read speed, but this seems like it won’t be a big issue and the only thing it should affect is game loading times slightly.

The Wii Wasabi DX is flash upgradable via DVD and also they have included a J-Tag connector as a failsafe backup if the chips ever need to be hardware upgraded because the DVD update was blocked for any reason. With that being said we don’t think the DVD update will ever be blocked, but it’s a really good thing to have the J-Tag connector there just in case, as the team could release a J-Tag programmer if DVD update was ever blocked and you would be able to program the chip using the programmer and a PC. The Wasabi DX Wii mod chip will work on any console and any drive type anywhere in the world, there is no having to check your consoles serial numbers, or worry about if you have an epoxy D2E drive or not, they will simply plug in and work no matter when you bought your Wii. The Wasabi DX for Wii is truly a plug and play solution that will enhance the experience and possibilities for your console. You will be able to play games from outside your consoles region and also play legitimate backups of your original games, no longer will the kids be able to destroy those expensive disks.

One of the other interesting things the Wasabi DX modchip has is the brickblocker, this feature has fast become one of the main reasons people will buy a chip over another, and we would go as far as saying it’s more important to the end user than the chip being upgradeable. The brick blocker function will make sure that if you play a game from outside your consoles region and it contains a Wii system update, the Wasabi DX will block the update so that your Wii won’t be damaged by the incorrect firmware version being sent to the consoles bios chip. In basic, a Europe PAL console was never meant to be able to play USA NTSC games, so the system does not have a safely measure in place that will stop a NTSC game from updating a PAL console with the incorrect firmware, when this happens it’s called bricking your console, this will basically freak the machine out and it will cause issues like original PAL games not to work on the PAL console anymore, to the Wii being totally useless, which is where the name bricking came in. So the Wasabi DX brick blocker will mean that if you play a NTSC game on a PAL console and that game wants to try and update your Wii, the Wasabi DX will block this update, for a lot of people that have kids, this is a very important safety feature.

Team wasabi while being one of the most expensive solutions for Wii out there in the past are known for having really reliable and stable solutions as how the original Wasabi chip was. While most other chips on the market had one or two teething issues, the Wasabi line has always been the most compatible, stable chip on the market. We think the only thing that stopped them from being up there with the other team’s solutions was just simply price. We think they have learned from their past and the price point for the Wii Wasabi DX is quite reasonable and in the ball park of the other solutions currently on offer that connect to the DVD drive ribbon cable, if you were to choose to buy Wasabi DX over the other solutions you would not be disappointed, we guess it just comes down to personal preference as they seems to all be boasting similar features at a fairly similar price. One thing can be assured when buying the Wasabi DX mod chip is quality, you won’t get it and think what you have paid for does not look the part, the main IC is an Actel which are renowned in the IC community for being the best and most reliable main processors for these kind of chips, the PCB is also not cheap and flimsy, in all as we said the Wii Wasabi DX is a quality chip and lives up the reputation this team has gained by their previous products.

Wasabi DX Wii Mod Chip Features
One of the most powerful chips for Wii to date, full features and works with all Wii drives ...

Installing the Wasabi DX mod chip could not be any simpler, in fact it’s easier to install than traditional solderless chips because of how it is connected to the console by using the DVD drives ribbon cable. This installation method used on these 3rd generation chips is possibly the most safe and advanced way to chip your console, unlike previous solderless chips which need to clip over a controller chip on the DVD drive board, these Wasabi DX connects directly to the Wii motherboard via the DVD drive cable and then runs another cable onto the Wii DVD drive itself. There is really very little room for error here and they won’t suffer from bad connections or pins bending inside the clip like the older solderless chips for Wii. We believe these types of solutions will be the future for Wii consoles and the features for them will only grow with time, if you’re the owner of an epoxy D2E drive or even the latest D3 drive, the Wii Wasabi DX modchip is one of the best solutions available. Once the Wasabi DX is installed, you will have access to be able to play games from other regions and also play backups of your legitimate original games. Being able to play games from other countries regions is important to a lot of end users, second hand games these days can be found online from places like EBay for a fraction of the price of what they can be found in your own country, but without having a chip such as the Wasabi DX installed into your console, you won’t be able to play them. The Wasabi DX also supports full flash upgradability via DVD and has the added failsafe option via a J-Tag connector, they also boast the brickblocker function which is a huge feature to most end users that have kids and you will not have to worry about the console being bricked with the Wasabi DX installed. Overall the Wasabi DX is one of the most advanced and feature packed chips on the market today for Wii, backed up by a team that is known for making quality products with leading edge function.

If you bought your Wii console before Aug 09 you don’t need to read this warning, if you bought it after Aug 09 please read on. There has been a new DVD drive released in the latest Wii consoles, they started to show up Aug 09 and the drive is called D3-2, currently there is no chip that will work on these drives, the only option is to replace the DVD drive or drive board, then you can use chips like the Solderless WiiKey 2 or even DriveKey or Wasabi DX, we have pre-modded Wii DVD drive packs using the WiiKey 2 which are a perfect option for these new consoles, just pull out the D3-2 drive and put in the pre-modded drive. So far they are not wide spread, we have listed the serial numbers below for each country for when these drives started to show, for AU serial numbers higher than the one listed is about a 60% chance it’s a D3-2, for other countries it’s not so high yet, but that will change as we get closer to Christmas, we have provided a link below to the Wii serial checker, you can use this to see if your console bought after Aug 09 has a high chance of being D3-2 or not, serial numbers lower than the ones listed below are safe and the Wasabi DX will work on them. So if your consoles serial number is higher than the ones listed below, it might be best to open the console before you order a chip for it to see if you have a D3-2 drive or not, they are easy to spot as the D3-2 chip does not have any writing on the chip like the D3 drives do, an example photo is shown below so you know what to look for. As we said above, currently there are no chips that work on these drives to allow you to play backups of your original games or originals from other regions, there are some chips coming, but none of them will allow you to play backup games from disk, the WiiKey Fusion is one, and their solution is to play games off SD memory cards for the consoles with D3-2 drives, this idea is quite good, but SD cards do cost a lot more than blank disks, we think the best solution if you have a D3-2 drive right now would be to buy a pre-modded Wii drive pack we sell and replace the drive, this way you will be able to play backups off disk, play games from other regions and be using a great chip like the WiiKey 2 which has the full 6x read speed, advanced brick blocker and GameCube support. The other solution would be the new Wode Jukebox, these will allow you to boot your games from an external HDD and this is also a very good way to go, it just depends if you want to load from disc or from external memory such as SD cards or Hard Drives.

Note that the USA & Canada have two ranges of serial numbers for the consoles there, for example LU3000 to LU3940 is one serial range and won’t have D3-2 drives, only consoles with the serial over LU3941 will have a 25% chance of having a D3-2 drive currently, the other serial range for consoles starts at LU5000 and goes up to LU7011 which won’t have D3-2 drives. Both serial number ranges are independent from each other, so if you have a LU3911 you will be safe because you are under LU3941, and if you have a LU7002 or LU6980 for example, you will also be safe because you are under the LU7012. Difference between a Wii D3 & D3-2 DVD drive

Serial Numbers For D3-2 Drives
If your serial number is lower than the ones listed below you can use the Wasabi DX, if it is higher than the ones listed below, you should use the Wii serial checker link below to see if your drive has any chance of being a D3-2, if it does you should open your Wii and check if you have a D3 or D3-2 drive, if you have a D3 you can use the Wasabi DX, if you have a D3-2 you will need the pre-modded DVD drive packs that we sell, or the WiiKey Fusion or Wode if you want to load from SD or HDD.
